If you have decided to take your first yoga class, then you are not alone. It is estimated that 43 percent of Americans who practice yoga do so to feel happier, and to become stronger both mentally and physically.
Even though the class is booked, you might now be wondering about what to wear. However, if you are intimidated by the thought that everyone might look like they have just taken part in an Instagram photo shoot, you need not worry.

The reality of it is, those who take part in yoga are all different shapes and sizes, with some people choosing to wear well known yoga brands, and others leaving materialistic things behind.
Yoga can be enjoyed to the fullest no matter who you are. This is because the community itself is varied and welcoming, so do not let the influencers put you off.
In this article we shall take a look at what things to wear to your first yoga class that are both comfortable and easy to find. We also take a look at what to avoid, too.
So, let’s get to it!
What Pants Should You Wear to Yoga?
You might be tempted to just wear regular leggings to yoga, and we don’t blame you. However, you may be better off wearing actual yoga pants.
They have been designed specifically to use whilst taking part in yoga, and allow you to stretch easily and comfortably.
Leggings are made of thin fabric which often is able to be seen through (yes, even the black ones). If you want to avoid the person behind you seeing more of you than necessary, opt for the yoga pants.
They are made from a much thicker material and often come in various colors and patterns. They also allow for so much stretch – and guess what? You cannot see through the material.
We love the simple LuluLemon full length yoga pants which include a waistband pocket for those necessities, and they feel very lightweight like you are not wearing anything. You cannot get any more comfortable than that.
If you prefer less of a legging look, AFITNE do bootcut yoga pants that also feature a waist pocket and are super stretchy.
What Tops Should You Wear to Yoga?
When it comes to the top half of the body, you will want to avoid a pretty crop top. Anything with lace should be left for another time. It is the same with a high impact sports bra too. You may find it is too restrictive when breathing.
Instead, opt for a low impact sports bra that still gives you support, but will not cause you to struggle to breathe. Whilst you might need a different bra for running, you can get away with less support whilst doing yoga.
As for the top itself, you will want something that fits to the body, but is not super tight. A fitted vest will do the trick. If you do not want too much cleavage on show, opt for a higher neckline.
Also, avoid sportswear and go for natural and breathable fabrics like cotton that will allow your skin to breathe. The Core 10 yoga T-shirt is a great allrounder. Made of 56 percent cotton, it is lightweight and breathable.
What Should You Wear on Your Feet to Yoga?
A lot of people who practice yoga tend to do so with bare feet. If this is not something you feel comfortable with, then do not worry, there is another option.
You could wear socks that have grippy feet – the type you wear indoors instead of slippers. You will not be the only one wearing them either, as it is quite common for people not wanting to go barefooted.
This is especially true when it comes to being a yoga newbie. Over time you might pluck up the courage to take those socks off and to feel the yoga mat underneath your feet.
What you do want to avoid is wearing any type of shoe, as this will restrict movements and is not a suitable thing to wear when practicing yoga. Also, make sure the socks are grippy. If they are not, you still risk slipping despite having a yoga mat.
This is because you will be walking across the hardwood floor to find a space to do yoga, and the last thing you want is to sprain an ankle before you have even started.
How Should You Have Your Hair at Yoga?
When it comes to your hair, you might be a little stuck on what to do. However, it does not have to be a difficult situation.
That is because, if you have locks that flow to the shoulders and below, the best thing to do is to tie it up into a ponytail.
You will find it much easier to do forward poses too. Once you have to lie on your back, you might find a ponytail is not the best option however. Because of this, you may need to change it!
Another option is a loose bun. Basically, it does not need to look 100 percent neat, and it is best to have a style that can be changed quickly – ponytail to bun, for example.
Final Thoughts
When it comes to yoga, you will want to wear clothes that are comfortable but fitting. That means keeping the baggy shirt that you normally wear post-working in the office exactly where it belongs – at home!
Because yoga is not a fashion contest (despite their being mirrors), you do not need to think too much about whether you look good or not. Yoga is about taking time out for yourself, and feeling calm in the present.
The mirrors are there so you can make sure you are getting the form correct, after all.
So long as you are wearing some of the suggestions mentioned above and you are feeling great, you will have a wonderful time at your first yoga class. Enjoy!
